In 1982 the nearest junior college was more than 50 km from Gorantla. Students who finished Class 10 had to travel to other towns to continue their studies, and many, especially girls and children from poorer families, had to stop there. Kempula Lakshminarayana founded SAPS Govt. Aided Junior College on 10 September 1982 so they could complete their Intermediate education at home.
